King in the Mountain

A base-building incremental mining game with dwarves. Build workshops, craft pickaxes and torches, send expeditions deeper into the mountain, and bring your fallen kingdom back to life.

King in the Mountain is an incremental dwarf mining game about rebuilding a fallen dwarf kingdom. You run a base inside the mountain, the Mountain Hall, and send your dwarves on expeditions into the forest and the mines. What they bring home becomes the tools for the next, deeper dig.

Start with one dwarf

You begin with a single dwarf, and only the forest is open. Fruit from the forest recruits more dwarves, while wood, stone, resin and a little copper become your first building materials. Upgrades unlock workshops, and forging your first pickaxe opens the mines.

Base building in the Mountain Hall

The Mountain Hall is your base: rooms and workshops joined by tunnels. Workshops such as the Sawmill, Mason, Smelter and Blacksmith form production chains that turn wood into planks, copper into bars and bars into pickaxes.

One dwarf runs each workshop while the others haul goods. Dwarves need no food or water, so the Hall keeps working while you're on an expedition.

Crafting and mining expeditions

Expeditions run on what your workshops make. Each pickaxe you pack brings one more dwarf, torches set how long you stay underground, and dynamite and ale give one-run boosts. Pickaxes wear out and torches burn down, so the workshops never stop.

In the forest, dwarves work by daylight. In the mines, you mark where they dig and follow the blue arrow down, level by level, until the last torch burns out. Every mine is a new map, and deeper levels hold rarer ore, gems, chests and blueprints for new buildings and recipes.

From hands-on to idle

Early on, every expedition needs you to choose the gear and the dig sites. As the kingdom grows, your dwarves get smarter and go straight for the materials you need. Later you can run several expeditions at once and automate them.

Artifacts from deep in the mines go on pedestals in the Mountain Hall and give your kingdom bonuses. There's no combat and no hunger, which makes King in the Mountain a cozy game: cute pixel-art dwarves building a kingdom one expedition at a time.
